2019 Midwest Vizsla Futurity

Jim Edgar Panther Creek - Justin Hess

The 2019 Midwest Vizsla Futurity marked the 37th running of this prestigious event, held March 29th at Jim Edgar Panther Creek. For the past 6 years the MVF has been fortunate to utilize these grounds. Improvements over the years have been a horse barn and a parking lot. Field Trial Clubs of Illinois announced this year that an indoor meeting space will be added, making these grounds invaluable.

Nineteen of the nation’s top Vizsla derby dogs were brought to the line to compete for the coveted Double Danny Quest Trophy with woodwork by George Haines. The drawing, dinner, and - for the first time - a calcutta was held Thursday night at Los Rancheros in Petersburg IL.

This year’s highly respected Judges were professional Britney trainer, Bob Burchett of Grovespring, MO and Ken Chenoweth of Fair Grove, MO.

As with any trial, the MVF would not be possible without volunteers dedicated not only to Vizslas but our sport. Chad Chadwell and Rodney Albin did a fantastic job as always making sure everything was in order. Mary Haines provided an amazing lunch and the checkbook!

MVF thanks Purina Pro Plan and Sportdog for their continued support. Without great sponsors none of this is possible.

Weather in central IL this time of the year will always be hit or miss. The rain held out until Saturday but that did not mean we had dry grounds. The winter provided extended periods of rain, snow, and sleet leaving the ground extremely saturated. Temps in the 50s somewhat made up for the mud.

Breaking away at 8am across the road, this year’s course was slightly different and provided an out and back with no deadhead time as experienced in years past. The course was well received and granted the judges opportunities to view the dogs on varied types of terrain.

Brace 1a Rock (Bill Stapleton) 1b Citori (Jarrett Bell)

Both dogs broke away to the front and made a huge cast to the right fence line. Citori had a find after the center grass strip at the 17 minute mark. Both dogs stayed to the front but fought the wind.

Brace 2a Toby (Brian Gingrich)

Toby was the bye brace of the day breaking away on the back course at 8:40. He was found standing to the front after the first creek crossing. As Brian ride up, both birds took flight. We turned south on the center grass strip as Toby made a big move to the front hanging to the right side. Toby had a find after the second creek crossing at the 28 minute mark. He ran a big race and stayed to the front which gave him the top spot.

Brace 3a Savage (Jarrett Bell) 3b Roland (Phillip Rauch)

Brace 3 broke away at 9:15 heading out from the parking lot. Roland had a nice move after the first creek crossing, hooking the entire left side and showing to the front. At 14 minutes, both dogs were found standing to the front. Phil and Jarrett dismounted and produced a bird. Savage went on to another find just before the center grass strip at 17 minutes.

Brace 4a Sammie (Paul Howard) 4b Dutch (Brian Gingrich)

Brace 4 broke away heading back into camp at 10am. At the center grass strip both, dogs made a large cast to the front taking the right side and working the center tree line back. Before the second creek crossing both dogs were seen way to the front taking the right edge. Sammie was found standing just after the second creek crossing. Paul worked the bird and moved Sammie on. Dutch had a find just before the final field. Sammie finished strong to the front and earned himself 3rd runner up.

Brace 5a Penny (Dave Oberst) 5b Eddie (Mark Vitkauskas)

Brace 5 broke away at 10:30 heading away from camp. After some help with directions, Penny found her way to the front. At 17 min Penny had a find to the right side of the first creek crossing. Eddie stayed to the front but did not manage to locate a bird.

Brace 6a Danali (Brian Gingrich) 6b Frank (Jarrett Bell)

Brace 6 broke away from the backside at 11:15. Danali had a find before the first creek crossing at 9 minutes. A divided find was carded at the 12 minute mark just after the creek crossing. Danali and Frank were let go and worked the right side hunting hard to the front. Frank was found standing after the center grass strip at 19 minutes. Both dogs had big, bold moves and were rewarded with Denai as Runner Up and Frank as 2nd Runner up.

Brace 7a Boomer (Dave Oberst) 7b Sako (Jarrett Bell)

Brace 7 broke away at 12:09 going out from the parking lot. Boomer was found standing a fresh hawk kill just before the first creek crossing at 9 minutes. At the 29 minutes, Boomer had a find at the end of the center grass strip. Boomer was again found standing after the second creek crossing and handled it broke. At 29 minutes, Sako was found standing to the left at the end of the course.

Brace 8a Sunny(Ron Chenoweth) 8b Tanner (Dave Oberst)

Bace 8 broke away at 12:38 heading back to camp. Sunny had a find 200 yards off the breakaway at 1 min. Ron dismounted, shot his gun, and sent Sonny on. Sonny charged to the front making some big moves. Sonny was found standing at the end of the grass strip at 17 minutes. Tanner found his own birds just before the second creek crossing at 24 minutes. Both dogs finished to the front with Sonny being a little directionally challenged at times.

Brace 9a Trump (Ron Chenoweth) 9b Aero (Dave Oberst)

Brace 9 broke away at 1:20. Aero located a bird at 2min on the fence row corner. Trump had a powerful race but at last sight was headed for the border failing to make field trials great again as Ron pulled the tracker at 20 minutes. Aero finished the 30 minutes, slowing towards the end.

Brace 10a Jane (Jarrett Bell) 10b Nova (Brian Gingrich)

Brace 10 broke away heading back to camp at 2pm. As we came through the first creek crossing, Jane was found standing to the left. Nova took a right at the center grass strip and, after a little convincing, Brian’s scout was able to get her to the front. After the center grass strip, Jane made a nice move and hooked the right side to the front. At 24 minutes, Jane found a bird at the corner fence and went on to finish strongly to the front.
